Cappadocia ; 60 million years ago, in the 3rd geological period, the Taurus Mountains arose.
After the Anatolian Plateau was depressed in the north, the volcanoes activated. Erciyes, Hasandağı and Göllüdağ, among them, spewed lava into the region. The ash deposited on the platform formed a soft tuff layer.
The top of the tuff layer was sometimes covered with a thin layer of lava consisting of hard basalt. The basalt cracked and shattered. The rain seeped through the cracks and began to shatter the soft tuff. Heated and cooled air and wind also took part in the formation. This created cones with caps of hard basalt rock. People named these various and interestingly shaped rocks: “Fairy Chimney”.
Tuff slabs without basalt cover eroded into a valley. Interesting shape. Later, the human hand, work and emotions were brought to work. For a long time, a great civilization was created, from settlements dating from nine to ten thousand years, through churches carved into the rocks by the first Christians, to large and safe underground cities.

Traditional Cappadocian houses and birdhouses carved into the rocks show the authenticity of the region. These houses were built on the slopes in the 19th century either from rocks or from cut stone.
The stone, which is the only architectural material in the region, is very easy to process because it is soft due to the region’s volcanic structure after exiting the quarry, but hardens upon contact with air and turns into a very durable building material.
Due to the amount of material used and its easy processing, the stones that are unique in this region have developed and become an architectural tradition.
The material of the yard and door of the house is wood. The upper part of the arched door is decorated with stylized ivy or rosette motifs. Birdhouses in the region are small buildings built at the end of the 19th and 18th centuries.
The surface of the birdhouses is decorated with rich ornaments and inscriptions by local artists. The region is also famous for its viticulture and grape growing.

Around the 9th century, people living in the region kept their nests in nests that they carved into the rocks. They used pigeon fertilizers in their crops and vineyards and achieved very productive results.
